Women Breaking Barriers in the Construction Industry
The construction industry has historically been male-dominated, but women have made significant strides in the last years and broken down barriers to change the face of construction. Initiatives and organizations are emerging to encourage and support women interested in construction careers. Lidia’s story is one example of women breaking barriers and making strides in the industry. Lidia’s success is a testament to the fact that women can excel in construction and pave the way for future generations of women in the industry.
Lidia’s Journey: From Nicaragua to Minnesota
Lidia’s formative years were spent in Nicaragua, where she developed a strong work ethic by helping her father on his farm. She was no stranger to physical work, and she quickly discovered her love for the satisfaction of working with her hands.
Making a Difference through Non-Profit Work
She has also been involved in non-profit organizations, like Techo Para Mi Pais, that build temporary houses for families living in poverty. Lidia found the experience incredibly rewarding, and it solidified her commitment to using her skills to impact the world positively.
Discovering a Passion for Construction
After relocating to Minnesota, Lidia found work in the construction industry. She re-discovered her passion for the sound of a construction site, the smell of sawdust, and the feeling of accomplishment that came with a hard day’s work. Lidia honed her skills at a siding company and a hardwood floors company, where she spent countless hours sanding floors and mastering the art of installing beautiful, high-quality hardwood.
Excelling in a Male-Dominated Field
Lidia’s dedication to her craft was evident, and she was determined to excel in a traditionally male-dominated field. With her exceptional work ethic and unwavering commitment to quality, Lidia quickly made a name for herself in the industry. She has become a trailblazer for women who aspire to succeed in construction.
Starting a Business and Inspiring Others
As she delved deeper into the industry and gained more experience, Lidia recognized her exceptional abilities and decided to start her own business. After years of deliberation and contemplation, Moonstone was born. She studied ardently and earned her General Contractor license, despite finding herself as the only woman in a room of over 200 men taking the exam. With her new license, she sought to provide exemplary service to the construction industry and inspire other women to take leadership roles.
