Interior Design Tips for Holiday Hosting

November 20, 2023

Hosting for the holidays involves more than decorating and cooking for the masses–the interior design of your space can play a significant role in your event’s success. Here are a few of our top tips for hosting at home:

Switch Up the Seating

Want to make sure the conversation is flowing? Rearrange seating that faces televisions or other inanimate objects so that chairs and sofas face each other, allowing for better conversation.

Making sure there’s enough seating for everyone is also critical. Use built-in seating, reconfigure modular sofas and sectionals, or even rent a few extra seats for the holidays.

Stretch the Dining Room

Gathering together to share a meal is basically the main event of most holidays, right? If you’re hosting lots of family and friends, a standard dining room may not be enough space to contain them all. Expand your dining room by clearing space elsewhere to add tables and chairs–or get ahead and keep entertaining in mind when remodeling your kitchen or dining space to accommodate large parties!

Swap Out Seasonal Textiles

It’s simpler than you think to transform your home for the holidays–at least the inside doesn’t require a 12-foot ladder and hundreds of yards of string lights. Just swap out everyday textiles for holiday versions! Throw blankets, pillow covers, cloth napkins, kitchen towels, and even some of your curtains can be substituted for richer, seasonally appropriate colors.

Guest-Ready Rooms

Hosting is about more than the meal–where are your guests staying? If they’re rooming with you overnight, ensure your guest rooms are up to snuff ahead of time! Aside from offering fresh linens and toiletries, you can give them a beautiful place to stay. Update the rooms with a quick remodel earlier in the year!

Don’t Forget the Kids

Need a kid-appropriate room on standby? You can quickly transform a space–one you’re not actively planning on using for other hosting activities–into a makeshift playroom. Do a quick sweep to make sure it’s proofed by covering outlets, storing or moving breakables and valuables out of reach, and covering fabrics that might stain. A finished basement makes an excellent playroom for older kids, but for younger kids, you’ll want to keep them at least within earshot!
