The existing bathroom in this 1891 Queen Anne home had been previously updated in a way that stripped it of its original character. Builder-grade finishes and a lack of architectural detail left the space feeling disconnected from the rest of the historic home.
Our goal was not simply to renovate, but to bring the room back in line with the stunning details and craftsmanship found throughout the rest of the house.
The vision for this bathroom was to create a space that feels true to the home’s Victorian roots while still functioning for modern life.
Traditional materials (think richly stained wood, marble surfaces, unlacquered brass, and classic subway tile) were layered with architectural details to add depth and reflect late 19th-century construction. A custom mosaic tile from Mosaic Tile Co. anchors the floor, while custom stained glass was designed specifically to echo the artistry common in Queen Anne homes of the era. Antique light fixtures and the original radiators further reinforce the home’s character.
Rather than overpower the space with ornament, we focused on balance: strong millwork, graphic mosaic flooring, and soft white tile that allows light to bounce through the room.
The result is a bathroom that feels timeless, rooted, and deeply aligned with the history of the house.
