When we first toured Wellesley, the basement was like most other Twin Cities historic homes – simply a dark, unfinished storage room. We knew bringing in the addition gave us the opportunity to give this Tudor Revival a fully finished basement, which is rare in any older house. We wanted to take a forgotten storage room and turn it into a space people would actually want to spend time in. And adding a wet bar transformed the space into a room that could function as a game room, rec room, or just a cozy hangout.
When designing this space, Lidia wanted it to feel fun and a little unexpected. Something that still felt connected to the home, but with more freedom to play with color and pattern. We let Mercury Mosaics tile become the star: the hexagon backsplash added texture and movement, and the deep blue hexagon floor brought in the kind of bold color that gives a basement room its own personality. White cabinetry helped brighten up what had always been a dark corner of the basement.
