The blue bathroom in our Wellesley project needed a lot of love. It would have been easy (and maybe even more cost effective) to demo everything and start fresh, but the original wall tile was in pristine condition and we knew it needed to be saved. Our approach focused on two priorities: keeping and restoring as many of the room’s historic elements as possible, and reworking the layout so the wall with the window could now face the new primary suite in the addition.
When we saw the tile in the bathroom, we knew we wanted it to drive the entire vision for the design. It was original, beautifully installed, and in flawless condition – the kind of detail that anchors an old home. Replicating the original floors with new tile helped ground the room, and a marble sink with chrome fixtures added a clean, classic layer that complemented the tile rather than working against it. Saving the original medicine cabinet felt important too, as it's one of those details that tells the story of the house. And introducing wallpaper brought in the color and texture the space was missing. Altogether, the goal was to let the original craftsmanship shine while giving the bathroom a refreshed, thoughtful update.
