The original dining room at Wellesley already held rich, incredible character – just hidden beneath layers of wallpaper and aging windows (think built-ins, original millwork, and a wedding-cake chandelier). We wanted to restore the space and give it new life while retaining the stunning historic elements that made this room so unique.
When we started designing this room, we knew the goal was to let the existing features guide the design. When we found the same wallpaper print the home originally had, it felt like a little miracle. Using the same pattern in a fresh palette brought in something new while still honoring what belonged. The wedding-cake chandelier was cleaned by hand, crystal by crystal, and rewired so it could shine as the centerpiece again. And when we opened the space slightly, adding a new arch to connect the dining room to the tea room, we made sure to tie it to the arches already found in the built-ins and other spaces in the home. This room was always beautiful; time had just gotten away from it. Our job was simply to bring it back to life.
